Maharashtra government formation: A quick recap of key developments so far
Recap of key developments in Maharashtra government formation so far:
Leadership talks in Delhi: BJP-led alliance leaders Devendra Fadnavis, Eknath Shinde, and Ajit Pawar met Amit Shah in Delhi to discuss government formation. Reports suggest Fadnavis is set to return as Chief Minister, but key decisions are still pending.
Eknath Shinde’s village visit: Shinde’s sudden departure to his native village in Satara sparked speculation of discontent, though Shiv Sena leaders denied any rift. Uday Samant said Shinde is not upset and will return soon to resume discussions. Another Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Shirsat said Shinde often visits his native before making any big decisions.
Power-sharing formula: The alliance is likely to retain the formula of one Chief Minister and two deputies. However, Shinde is reportedly reluctant to take a deputy CM role, with his party advocating for his continued involvement in the government.
Cabinet allocation talks: The BJP may retain the Home portfolio, with Ajit Pawar’s NCP likely keeping Finance. Shinde’s Sena is expected to manage urban development and public works. The BJP could get 22 Cabinet berths, with 12 for Shiv Sena and 9 for the NCP.
