We doubt we were alone in wondering whether some kind of transmogrification system could reach fashion-conscious Helldivers 2 players grasping hands, but sadly, that won’t be the case. Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt put this particular pipe dream to bed, definitively stating, “We are not doing transmog.”
Transmog, sometimes known more appropriately as transmogrification, is a mechanic some games employ that allows players the statistical benefit of a specific set of gear or equipment while presenting the visual/aesthetic look of another. Diablo IV and Final Fantasy XIV both enjoy robust transmog systems.
Pilestedt responded to a user on Twitter and said they won’t implement something similar in Helldivers 2 because “it doesn’t make sense. Equipment looks different because it has different effects. Swapping one for the other is like having an apple that tastes like bacon or the other way around.”
We aren’t sure we necessarily agree or even understand that metaphor, but there is undoubtedly space within the current framework to tinker with how equipped gear works. What about the ability to swap out perks for specific, limited alternatives? Surely, there is some wiggle room there.
