Jonah Heim’s heroics keep the celebration going

ARLINGTON – As far as opening day celebrations go, it’s impossible to top the unfurling the ol’ championship banner from the rafters. Especially if it’s the first one you’ve ever unfurled.

Nevertheless, the Rangers tried to do it Thursday.

Came pretty close, too.

A bottom-of-the-ninth game-tying pinch hit home run from a slap hitter. High drama for the rookie phenom making his debut. And ultimately, a redemptive walk-off single for a catcher who had been perplexed by a seemingly missed critical call. The final: Rangers 4, Chicago 3 in 10 innings.

Jonah Heim’s single with two outs in the 10th scored Manfred Man designated runner Marcus Semien. It had followed a long seven-pitch battle in which Wyatt Langford grounded into a force out at home. And it had all been made possible by Travis Jankowski, with 10 home runs in his major league career, homering on his first swing of the season as a ninth-inning pinch hitter.

Jankowski’s homer came after the Cubs had taken a 3-2 lead in the top of the inning on what appeared to be a missed call by home plate umpire Chad Fairchild. On a swing by pinch hitter Miles Mastrobuoni, Fairchild ruled there had been no contact. But replays seemed to show the ball change directions, then hit the dirt and scoot by Heim. He initially thought the ball was dead and was late to react, allowing Michael Busch to score all the way from second base.

It seemed to be a deflating kind of moment. It’s hard to deflate the defending world champions.

Here are five VERY IMPORTANT observations from the Rangers win:

Ray Davis Q&A: Building the Texas Rangers, TV uncertainty, Jordan Montgomery and more

Highest quality: Nathan Eovaldi did what Jacob deGrom couldn’t do in last season’s opener. He gave the Rangers a quality start. Featuring a fastball that ranged up to 97 mph and mixing his cutter and splitter about 20% of the time, Eovaldi kept the Cubs mostly off balance, going six innings and allowing a pair of runs on four hits.

You might say he was in midseason form. But it might be better to say he was in postseason form. Since the start of the 2023 postseason, Eovaldi is 5-0 with a 2.95 ERA.

Best bounce: The Rangers got a break on what seemed like a tie-breaking double by Cubs No. 8 hitter Nick Madrigal in the seventh inning. The ball into the right-field corner hit the warning track and bounced over the wall, for an automatic double. But because it was an automatic double, it meant baserunner Michael Busch could only advance two bases and had to hold up at third.

Josh Sborz responded by striking out Yan Gomes to end the inning, strand the runner and keep the game tied at two.

Most fitting stat: Wyatt Langford had 20 RBIs in spring training. He was a run-producing machine. So, perhaps it’s fitting that he recorded his first official RBI even before his first hit. After taking a called third strike in his first at-bat, Langford came to the plate with a runner on third and one out. Did what any rookie should: Found a pitch to drive and lifted it to the outfield. Made for an easy sac fly.

Langford didn’t have to wait too long for the first hit either. He picked it up in the next at-bat, beating out a grounder to deep short. His speed is an asset.

Best stretch: With the Rangers facing a lefty, at least until Justin Steele popped a hamstring in the fifth, Ezequiel Duran got the call at first base. It was his first major league start at the position. Didn’t look bad either. He made a nice stretch to pick the relay and complete an inning-ending double play in the fifth. The Rangers also turned a double play to end the second inning.

But a reminder: He’s still new to the position and a bit short by first-base standards. Duran froze for a second on Cody Bellinger’s two-out liner in the sixth. As a result, he couldn’t snag the ball and it landed along the line for a run-scoring double.

Best hype video: They have a hype video. Who knew? Guess that’s one of the perks of finally winning a World Series. The pre-game banner-unfurling ceremony started with an honest-to-goodness highlight video of big moments on the way to the World Series. Quite a difference from the past, when most of the Rangers’ most buzz-inducing moments either included somebody throwing a punch or needed play-by-play accompaniment. It was simple. Well done.

The whole ceremony, from the video, to Bruce Bochy thanking the fans via handheld microphone, to the unfurling of the banner, was pretty much perfect.
