New portrait of Shane MacGowan to hang in the late Pogues singer’s favourite pub in Tipperary

“This artwork holds profound significance as it is intended to be hung in the Philip Ryan pub, serving as a tribute to Shane’s memory,” said a spokesperson.

“Will had the privilege of presenting the painting to Siobhán MacGowan, sister of Shane, who shared the touching sentiment to the artwork. Siobhán, alongside Philly Ryan, the gracious proprietor of the Philip Ryan pub, and to his close friends, expressed their heartfelt appreciation for Will McNally’s talent and dedication to immortalising Shane MacGowan’s legacy.”

Philip Ryan’s Pub is officially the oldest running pub in Nenagh in County Tipperary, and Shane was a frequent visitor where he had a circle of friends.

Discussing his painting of Shane with Nectarine House Art Galleries in London, Will said the Pogues star was very patriotic, and Irish like himself.

“It was an absolute honour when I was asked to paint this piece,” said Mr McNally. “I’ve added the musical notes here just to symbolise the music that he loved. He sadly passed away last year. It was a great honour to paint this portrait.”

A spokesperson for the gallery said they were proud to announce, capturing the essence of Shane McGowan, Will McNally’s painting commissioned by Nectarine House Art Gallery for Philly Ryan’s pub, “Shane’s favourite pub in Ireland and Shane’s sister Siobhán.”

“A special thank you to Philly Ryan for his heart warming welcome and the amazing band on the night,” added a spokesperson.

The Nectarine Gallery described Will’s work as being comparable to UK street artist Banksy and pop art innovator Andy Warhol, but his “flair for creating eye-popping, modern, neon-soaked pieces is all his own.”

“He may take inspiration from his Irish and Cypriot roots, but there’s a distinctively British feel to Will’s art that hasn’t gone unnoticed by some of the most influential names in the world of film and music.

“Demand for a piece of Will McNally art has soared in 2020, which has seen him take on an array of private commissions from film and music fans alike, as well as requests from Warner Bros Studios and Saudi Royalty.”
