SALT LAKE CITY — The Gators opened the season Thursday night with a 24-11 loss to No. 14 Utah in a rematch of the 2022 season opener at The Swamp. The home team won both games.
Gators head coach Billy Napier met with reporters after the game to discuss the first visit by a Southeastern Conference team to Rice-Eccles Stadium. Napier was visibly disappointed at the result, but stressed he saw a lot to be excited as the young Gators turn their attention to the rest of the season.
“I would say this: I see a lot of the things I thought I’d see from our team with intangibles,” Napier opened. “I think we have leadership. I think we have accountability. It’s a group that cares about each other. We have a lot of players that will continue to get better as they gain experience.
“But there’s no question that we can coach better and play better today.”
