Elle Fanning’s Practical Heels Brought Rich Grandma Energy

Grandparents have been making fashion waves. Their chic linen looks are a summer mainstay, the chunky orthotics they wear on repeat are becoming the ‘it’ sneaker among supermodels, and “eclectic grandpa” is somehow a thing now. Whether you’re ready to admit it or not, grandparents are the fashion blueprint, and Elle Fanning just wore footwear that proves this point.

When the actress stepped out in New York City this week, she not only debuted a new short ‘do — which of course I immediately saved to my haircuts folder because I, too, am a short-haired girlie — but also made the case for dressing like a fancy grandma. The entire look revolved around one statement piece: a cherry-red trench coat. The jacket felt like a wearable version of a luxe silk robe, featuring a belted waist that was tied and a super lustrous finish. It was — dare I say — the chicest take on this season’s popular outerwear trend.

But the rich grandma look didn’t end there, because poking out from underneath the silky jacket were a pair of sheer black tights and grandma-esque heels.

Kitten heels are back, and Fanning’s all-black black pumps felt like the most wearable take on the posh trend. While many are reaching for strappy, slingback styles, hers featured a closed back for added security. Plus, the heel was probably less than one-inch tall. I know calling a pair of heels “practical” feels silly, but these are, well, just that. 

The black grandma heels were the perfect finishing touch to her red-hot coat, but I also love the idea of pairing the style with more everyday pieces, including trousers and midi skirts. And, for spring and summer, I’m personally planning to grab a creamy white and/or a soft pastel pair to elevate my favorite light-wash denim.
