New opportunities for India-UK textile trade: AEPC Chairman at Bharat Tex 2025 roadshow

AEPC Chairman Sudhir Sekhri emphasised the growing opportunities to strengthen trade ties between India and the UK during the Bharat Tex 2025 roadshow held in London from 27th to 29th November 2024. The event, which highlighted India’s expanding textile sector, was a platform for both nations to explore new avenues for collaboration in sustainability and innovation.

The roadshow brought together over 100 key figures from renowned brands, retail chains, and research bodies within the fashion industry. Notable attendees included Shubhra, Trade Advisor, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India; Premal Udani, Chairman, Export Promotion Committee, AEPC; and Roger Gilmartin, Senior Associate at Gherzi Consulting.

In her address, Shubhra highlighted the transformative growth of India’s textile industry, driven by government initiatives such as the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme and PM MITRA Parks. She also noted the shared values of sustainability between India and the UK, which create a strong foundation for further cooperation.

Sekhri, speaking at the event, pointed out the UK’s vital role as one of the largest global importers of textiles. India’s textile exports to the UK were valued at USD 1.2 billion in 2023, representing over 6% of the UK’s market share. He further mentioned that UK brands such as Marks & Spencer, Primark, and Burberry are already sourcing high-quality, sustainable products from India.

Delegates also met with Indian High Commissioner to the UK, Vikram Doraiswamy, to discuss trade, joint ventures, and the potential for a free trade agreement. The discussions underscored a strong interest from UK textile players to deepen their engagement with India’s textile industry.

The Bharat Tex 2025 event will be held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi and the India Expo Centre & Mart in Greater Noida from 12th to 17th February 2025, showcasing the full textile value chain with a special focus on Handicrafts, Apparel Machinery, Chemicals, and Dyes.
