40 lesser-known destinations in India to be developed to boost tourism

The Centre has approved 40 projects in lesser-known destinations totalling over Rs 3,295 crore across 23 states to be transformed into major tourist attractions to ensure more distribution of visitors throughout India. Following the guidelines issued by the Department of Expenditure, the Ministry of Tourism released operational instructions for Special Assistance to States/Union Territories for Capital Investment (SASCI) to support the development of iconic tourist centres.

The Ministry sent the SASCI guidelines to state governments, urging them to submit proposals for projects that could create significant tourist destinations. By the submission deadline of October 15, 2024, a senior ministry official reported that 87 proposals, worth over Rs 8,000 crore, were received.

In accordance with the guidelines and criteria, the Ministry of Tourism then shortlisted 40 projects, totaling Rs 3,295.76 crore, which have now been approved by the Department of Expenditure. These projects span 23 states and include prominent destinations such as Rang Ghar in Sivasagar (Assam), Matsyagandha Lake in Saharsa (Bihar), a proposed Town Square in Porvorim (Goa), and Orchha in Madhya Pradesh.

The purpose of the initiative is to provide interest-free loans with a 50-year repayment period to states, enabling them to develop and promote iconic tourist sites on a global scale. The ministry emphasised that this investment will not only enhance tourism but also stimulate local economies and generate employment through sustainable tourism development.

“This program is designed to reduce congestion at high-traffic tourist spots and ensure a more equitable distribution of visitors across the country,” the ministry explained. “By focusing on lesser-known destinations, we aim to improve the overall tourism experience, boost local economies, and encourage sustainable sector growth.”

All states are required to complete their projects within two years, with funding set to be disbursed before March 2026.
