World AIDS Day: How health insurance and wellness can improve life for those living with HIV

World AIDS Day, observed every year on December 1, serves as a reminder of the ongoing battle against HIV/AIDS. It also provides an opportunity to highlight the need for inclusive healthcare policies, particularly in the area of health insurance for people living with HIV/AIDS in India.

Challenges in accessing health insurance

People living with HIV/AIDS face unique barriers when it comes to accessing health insurance. Stigma, high premiums, and policies that often exclude necessary treatments create an environment of discrimination.

These obstacles deny individuals essential healthcare services and perpetuate their vulnerability.

Pankaj Nawani, CEO of CarePal Secure, emphasises the need for change.

He calls for more awareness and regulatory changes to ensure that health insurance policies are inclusive.

“To address these issues, we must begin by fostering awareness and eliminating stigma within the health insurance industry. Education campaigns targeted at insurers, healthcare providers, and the broader community can dismantle harmful stereotypes and encourage more inclusive practices,” he told CNBC-TV18.com.

Insurance coverage for people living with HIV/AIDS

In recent years, the landscape for HIV/AIDS-related health insurance has improved.

Policies are now available for individuals living with HIV, even if their condition has not progressed to the AIDS stage.

People with a CD4 count over 350 are eligible for specialised health insurance coverage, which is not restricted by age.

These policies typically cover medical expenses when HIV progresses to AIDS.

They provide financial support for hospitalisation, outpatient treatments, mental health support, and preventive care.

Additionally, some policies include antiretroviral therapy (ART) and non-allopathic treatments, further enhancing the quality of life for policyholders.

However, exclusions exist.

If AIDS is diagnosed within a certain period from policy purchase, it may be excluded from coverage. Moreover, communication with insurers is crucial, as claims may be denied if the AIDS diagnosis is not reported within the specified timeframe.

Wellness and holistic health support

Beyond medical insurance, wellness practices play a vital role in the mental and emotional well-being of individuals living with HIV/AIDS.

Yoga, for example, has proven to be beneficial in boosting immunity and easing stress.

Unni Krishnan Mohandas, Yoga Guru at Niraamaya Retreats Surya Samudra, highlights the importance of wellness: “We should recognise the healing power of yoga in strengthening immunity and easing the emotional challenges faced by those living with HIV/AIDS. Through walking meditation and breathing exercises, we aim to help reduce the mental stress caused by societal pressures, family expectations, and career challenges.”

The combination of insurance coverage and wellness practices can significantly improve the lives of individuals living with HIV/AIDS.
