“It is with great sadness that we announce the demise of our chairman, T Ananda Krishnan, who passed away peacefully on Nov 28. He has made significant contributions to nation-building and the corporate world, and his philanthropic initiatives have touched many lives. We humbly ask that the family’s wishes to mourn in private be respected,” the company said.
Malaysia’s third-richest person, Krishnan built a diversified business empire spanning telecommunications, media, satellites, oil and gas, and real estate. Among his notable ventures, Aircel—one of his companies—sponsored the Indian Premier League (IPL) team Chennai Super Kings.
Born on April 1, 1938, in Kuala Lumpur’s Brickfields area, popularly known as “Little India,” Krishnan’s entrepreneurial journey began in earnest with the founding of Maxis Berhad in 1993.
The company is now a leading telecom provider in Malaysia. He further expanded into media through Astro, satellite operations with MEASAT, and oil and gas enterprises such as Bumi Armada and Pexco.
Additionally, Krishnan held significant stakes in Maxis and Sri Lanka Telecom.
