BHEL-Hitachi Energy India consortium wins Khavda-Nagpur renewable energy project

Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) on Monday (November 25) said the company in a consortium with Hitachi Energy India Ltd, has secured a contract for the establishment of two high voltage direct current (HVDC) terminal stations as part of the Khavda renewable energy zone phase V project.

“Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has received a Notification of Award for Khavda Nagpur HVDC project from Power Grid Corporation of India Limited,” Bharat Heavy Electricals said in a regulatory filing.

The project, awarded by Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL), will facilitate the evacuation of renewable energy from Khavda in Gujarat to Nagpur in Maharashtra. The contract involves designing and executing +800kV, 6000 MW HVDC terminal stations at Khavda pooling station-2 (KPS2) and Nagpur, covering a distance of 1,200 km.

This initiative is part of the larger interstate transmission system for evacuating 8GW of renewable energy under phase V, part A from the Khavda region. Scheduled for completion by 2029, this project is a significant step in India’s 500GW renewable energy target and marks the first-ever HVDC project tendered through a tariff-based competitive bidding process (TBCB).

BHEL and Hitachi Energy India will implement bi-directional parallel HVDC bipoles and associated AC substations to ensure seamless transmission of renewable power across the states.

Shares of Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd ended at ₹241.45, up by ₹7.05, or 3.01%, on the BSE.
