Azmi won the seat by 12,753 votes for the fourth time.
The Samajwadi Party contested in alliance with Maha Vikas Aghadi, comprising Congress, Sharad Pawar-led NCP-SP and Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT).
Malik, who started his political career with the Samajwadi Party, won his first election from the now-abolished Nehru Nagar seat in 1996, during Azmi’s leadership in the state. However, after his expulsion from the party in 2001, Malik joined the then-united Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and secured another term in 2004. Later, he moved to the Anushakti Nagar seat in Mumbai and won in the 2009 and 2019 polls.
Besides Azmi, Malik faced competition from Suresh Patil of the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena. Patil is the second candidate from the ruling Mahayuti, which also includes the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Ajit Pawar-led NCP. The saffron party earlier stated it would support Patil and not Malik.
Patil and Azmi contested against each other in the 2014 polls. Azmi secured a win by just under 10,000 votes.
