The Key Contest

Zeeshan Siddique, the sitting MLA, had won the Vandre East seat in 2019 on a Congress ticket but joined the Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party last month following his expulsion from Congress. His campaign has been overshadowed by the murder of his father, senior politician Baba Siddique, earlier this year.

Varun Sardesai, a first-time candidate and maternal cousin of Uddhav Thackeray’s son Aaditya Thackeray, represents the Shiv Sena (UBT). Sardesai has drawn significant attention due to his family ties and his party’s attempt to reclaim the seat as part of its stronghold.

Trupti Sawant, a former MLA and widow of late Shiv Sena leader Bala Sawant, is also in the fray, hoping to revive her political career under the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena.
