Most exit polls have predicted a victory for the incumbent Mahayuti alliance led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). At the same time, a few gave an edge to the Maha Vikas Aghadi coalition in opposition.
The Mahayuti coalition, led by the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, BJP, and Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party, is aiming for a second consecutive term, with surveys suggesting they hold an edge. The MVA comprising Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), and NCP (SP), has been showing strong signs of contesting the race fiercely, keeping the final outcome uncertain.
To form the next government, an alliance needs at least 145 seats in the 288-member assembly. In the Mahayuti camp, the BJP is contesting 149 seats, Shiv Sena is fighting for 81, and Ajit Pawar’s faction of NCP is fielding candidates in 59 constituencies. On the other side, the opposition MVA alliance has Congress contesting 101 seats, Shiv Sena (UBT) in 95, and NCP (SP) in 86.
As the votes are counted, political parties will be bracing for either celebration or defeat, with the future of Maharashtra’s governance at stake.
