Injured Jasprit Bumrah could miss out on Champions Trophy berth: Report

Jasprit Bumrah, India’s bowling spearhead, has been rested and may not be part of India’s squad for the ICC Champions Trophy starting February 19, media reports suggest.

Bumrah suffered a minor back injury that ruled him out of the final innings of the fourth Test against Australia, casting doubt over his inclusion in the 15-member Champions Trophy squad.

Bumrah’s recent career has been plagued by injury — he missed 11 months of cricket, from September 2022 to August 2023, after a back injury. The speedster missed the 2022 T20 World Cup and the entire 2023 season of the Indian Premier League after undergoing surgery.

According to a report in the Times of India, Burmah has been told to report to the BCCI’s Center of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru. Initial assessments suggest that the issue is limited to swelling and not a severe injury.

According to India strength and conditioning coach Ramji Srinivasan, Bumrah must go through a thorough diagnosis and rehabilitation before his inclusion in the squad can be finalised.

India has crossed the January 12 deadline set by ICC for all teams to announce their squads. Six of the eight teams participating in the tournament hosted by Pakistan have announced their squads.
