The opening match of the ninth edition of the ICC Champions Trophy will see the defending champions Pakistan take on the mighty New Zealand in Karachi on February 19, 2025. Pakistan will be hosting the tournament and eight international teams will participate in 15 matches.
India’s probable 15 member squad for ICC Champions Trophy 2025:
Rohit Sharma | Rohit Sharma will most likely lead the team and open the batting innings in the ICC Champions Trophy. Sharma’s captaincy record is far more impressive in the shorter format than in the longer format. While his batting record are reflective of the same. Sharma has been a proven match-winner in One Day Internationals (ODIs) and recently led India to a T20 World Cup win and ODI World Cup final last year. He is the only batsmen to score three double centuries in ODIs.
Virat Kohli | Virat Kohli is known as the “Chase Master” in white ball cricket, chasing down robust targets with relative ease. He will likely retain his no.3 spot in the batting lineup for the upcoming CT 2025. Kohli’s record speak for itself. He has played 295 ODIs for India, scored nearly 14,000 runs and has a batting average of 58 plus. His impressive records and past performances cement his spot in the playing eleven.
Jaiswal will most likely open alongside his Rohit Sharma. The opening duo have put up solid partnerships each time they have taken the field together. After scoring heaps of runs in the recently concluded BGT Trophy, Jaiswal will look to carry his impressive form and confidence in to the CT 2025 next month.
Shubman Gill | After a lean 2024, Shubman Gill will look to redeem himself in the upcoming CT 2025. Gill has broken many records in this format of the game, including becoming only the 10th batsman to score a double century in ODIs. He also placed seventh on the list of Most Runs Scored in a Calendar Year in ODIs. His batting average equals Kohli’s in ODI’s. Gill is viewed as a bright prospect in Indian Cricket and will look further his run in ODIs.
Rishabh Pant | Pant missed out on two major white ball tournaments last year due to an unfortunate accident that kept him away from the game for more than 18 months. After putting up strong performances after making a comeback in Tests, Pant will be inching for a spot in the 15 member squad for CT 2025. Although, Pant has been away from white ball cricket he is a proven match winner in any format of the game. He will surely get a call by the selectors for CT 2025, as left-handed wicket-keeper batsmen are a rare commodity in the sport and offer tremendous advantage the team.
Kl Rahul | Kl Rahul will likely bat three-down in the CT 2025. He will playing in ODI’s after a long gap. Selectors are to once again saw some faith in the skills and talents of KL Rahul and are sure to open the doors for the batsmen. His batting records in ODIs are astounding. Rahul has played 58 matches and scored around 3300 runs at an average of 33 in ODIs. Although, his batting stats are sufficient to grant him a place in the CT 2025 side, he has often failed to play impactful innings and crumbled in pressure situations.
Hardik Pandya | Hardik Pandya is India’s most certified and seasoned all-rounder. Pandya holds an incredible record in ODIs. He has appeared in 86 ODIs, scored around 1700 runs at an average of 34 and scalped 84 wickets as no.5 batsmen and a sixth bowling option in the team. Pandya will surely retain his spot in the playing eleven as he was one of the key players in the T20 World Cup 2024.
Ravindra Jadeja | Ravindra Jadeja gas been the rockstar of the Indian Team since the time he made his debut in 2009. He has been a constant fixture in the Indian ODI team and had made vital contributions for the team over the years. Jadeja has scored 2756 runs and picked up 220 wickets in 197 ODI’s for India. He skills will be vital on flat turning wickets in Dubai.
Nitish Reddy | The 21-year-old batsman is yet to play an ODI for India. After an incredible performance in the BGT trophy, Nitish Reddy is likely to receive his maiden call-up in ODI.
Washington Sundar | Washington Sundar is an upcoming talented young cricketer, and a like-to-like replacement for the recently retired Ravichandran Ashwin. Sundar has played 22 ODIs picking up 23 wickets and scoring 315 runs in the process. His batting stats do not reflect his handiness with the bat, he is more than capable as a batsmen who can score crucial runs in the backend of the innings.
Jasprit Bumrah | Jasprit Bumrah is easily India’s best speedster across all formats, and if fully fit will walk into the Indian team. Bumrah copped an injury in the fifth test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy preventing him from bowling in the final innings of the test. Bumrah is expected to fully recover before the CT 2025 and will be expected to make vital contributions if India hopes to win the trophy. India desperately missed Bumrah in the 50 over world cup that happened in May in India, especially in the finals where India was defeated by ten wickets.
Arshdeep Singh | Arshdeep Singh is yet to make his debut in ODIs, although he is included in the ODI squad to play England at home. Arshdeep is a top performer for India in T20s taking wickets at the top. Left-hander seamers are a rarity in India, including Singh in the bowling line-up will provide much needed variety to the uni-dimensional Indian bowling line up. Arsheep can bowl the top overs, middle overs and even bowl in the backend of the innings.
Mohammed Siraj | Mohammed Siraj has been an integral part of the Indian team for quite some time, acting as a strong seam bowling option. Siraj is a master of seam who can capitalise on the rising cracks on the Dubai wickets and provide India with breakthroughs in the middle overs. Siraj will most likely be included in the 15 member squad for CT 2025, however, his place in the playing eleven is still uncertain.
Mohammed Shami | Mohammed Shami will receive a call up for the CT 2025. The Indian pace bowler was MIA for more than year after suffering a serious to the leg and has returned to competitive in the Ranji Trophy. A fully fit and flowing Shami is a menace to any batting line up.
Kuldeep Yadav | The left-arm Chinaman could be India’s ticket to winning the CT 2025. Kuldeep Yadav can exploit the flat, dry pitches in Dubai with his spin-bowling capabilities. Yadav in top form can bamboozle even the finest batsmen.
India could opt to go in with an extra bowler and all-rounder instead of extra batsmen unlike the last time the team played a major ODI tournament. The flat Dubai wickets will make batting easy, allowing teams to play an extra bowler or an all-rounder. With the inclusion Reddy, who has proved that he is more than capable with the bat will allow India the opportunity to play an extra bowler.
