His remarks come after Justice Juan Merchan imposed an “unconditional discharge” sentence following Trump’s conviction on 34 charges of business fraud related to a hush money payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels during the 2016 presidential campaign.
In a post on the social media platform Truth Social, Trump dismissed the case, stating, “Today’s event was a despicable charade, and now that it is over, we will appeal this Hoax, which has no merit, and restore the trust of Americans in our once great System of Justice.”
Trump, whose presidential inauguration is scheduled for January 20, further claimed, “The Radical Democrats have lost another pathetic, unAmerican Witch Hunt.” He emphasized his stance, saying, “I was given an UNCONDITIONAL DISCHARGE. That result alone proves that, as all Legal Scholars and Experts have said, THERE IS NO CASE, THERE WAS NEVER A CASE, and this whole Scam fully deserves to be DISMISSED.”
Trump also called the American people the “real jury,” asserting that their decision to re-elect Republicans with an overwhelming mandate for his second term proves his innocence.
“As the American People have seen, this ‘case’ had no crime, no damages, no proof, no facts, no Law, only a highly conflicted Judge, a star witness who is a disbarred, disgraced, serial perjurer, and criminal Election Interference,” he added.
Trump’s conviction in May revolved around falsifying business records to hide a $130,000 payment to Stormy Daniels. The payment, made on the eve of the 2016 election, was intended to suppress claims of an alleged sexual encounter.
During the court hearing, Justice Merchan stressed that despite Trump’s presidential success, it did not “reduce the seriousness of the crime or justify its commission in any way.” However, he acknowledged the legal mandate to respect the protections provided to the President under the law.
“Despite the extraordinary breadth of those protections, one power they do not provide is the power to erase a jury verdict,” Merchan concluded.
Trump’s legal team has vowed to continue the fight, asserting that the case has no legal standing.
