Top govt search panel to hold Interviews for RBI Deputy Governor next week: Sources

A top government search and selection panel is set to meet in the capital next week for finalising the new Deputy Governor’s candidature in place of Dr Michael Patra, whose term ends January 15.

Cabinet Secretary T V Somanathan heads the panel and will comprise the RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra, the DFS Secretary M Nagaraju, senior government officials, and outside experts.

Sources indicated a large number of applications had come in by November 30 and the government has sifted through them. Some of the applicants could be Poonam Gupta, Director General, National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), Professor Prachi Mishra, Ashoka University, Chetan Ghate, Director, the Institute of Economic Growth, among others.

The search and selection panel is empowered to invite individuals who have not applied for the post and can also change the qualification criteria.

The government advertised the vacancy in early November with a deadline of November 30

th for receiving applications. Among the stipulated qualifications and experience for the position included,

1) persons who have at least 25 years of work experience in Public administration, including experience at the level of Secretary or equivalent in the Government of India; or

2) Persons who have at least 25 years of work experience in an Indian or International Public Financial Institutions; or

3) Persons of exceptional merit and track record at the national or international level in the relevant field(s).

4) Age: Not more than 60 years of age as on 15.01.2025.

Dr Michael Patra is a seasoned, renowned economist and a career RBI banker, incharge of the crucial Monetary Policy Department, among others.
