CBSE to roll out massive training programme to upgrade 15 lakh teachers across India

Around 15 lakh teachers, right from the school principal to the primary class teacher, will undergo a comprehensive 50-hour training programme in 2025 to enhance their competency in teaching students as part of a massive pan-India exercise.

News18 has learnt that the CBSE will launch a ‘Training Intervention Framework & Solutions’ (TIFS) framework next year for the professional development of teachers. The scale of the exercise is unprecedented as it will cover 15 lakh teachers in 30,000 CBSE-affiliated schools in the entire country.

The mandate of the CBSE includes serving the educational institutions more effectively, to be responsive to the educational needs of the students. The National Education Policy 2020 recommends a competency-focused education and hence capacity building of teachers becomes a critical need.

The NEP recommends mandatory 50 hours of Continuous Professional Development for every teacher and head teacher. The TIFS training will cover primary teachers (grade 1 to 5), Trained Graduate Teachers (grade 6 to 8), Post Graduate Teachers (grade 9 to 12), Vice-Principals, Principals, Counsellors, Coordinators, Librarians and others.

“To meet the annual training targets, a comprehensive training system is considered crucial for managing the entire training activities from identification of training needs, curriculum design, development of content, delivery of training, monitoring, and evaluation to assess the impact of such training. The Board desires to strengthen its training division by introducing a robust and integrated system, Training Intervention Framework & Solutions (TIFS), to manage the entire lifecycle of training activities,” says a CBSE document.

What is TIFS?

The idea is to achieve academic excellence by empowering teachers through regular training in academic subjects. The examination result data gives an insight to determine the school-wise, subject-wise, region-wise training needs for eventually preparing an annual and monthly training plan for schools and individual teachers. “CBSE is focusing on competency-based education and is committed to reach out to all teachers as far as practically possible,” a document says.

TIFS is conceptualised as a robust learning management system, which would facilitate an environment of continuous learning addressing the learning gaps and leveraging from the courses made available. CBSE will hire a consultancy with experience in teachers’ training for a period of three years to develop the strategy; design the operating processes and policies; set up, operationalize and commission TIFS and ensure it is stabilised over the next three years.

The consultancy will review the good practices across India and globally and benchmark it against the existing practices at the CBSE. It will also conduct an online survey or assessment of the training requirement from a representative sample of schools. A high-level training curriculum will be built to bridge the skill gaps.

The CBSE has around 30,000 schools in India and 257 schools in 25 foreign countries affiliated to it. These include 1247 KVs, 5280 Government/Aided Schools, and around 22408 Independent Schools.

Gearing Students for Career Ahead

The CBSE will also train counsellors and wellness teachers in CBSE-affiliated schools to enhance their career counselling capabilities. This is to enable wellness teachers to offer psycho-social support and counselling to students and ensure counsellors are equipped with the knowledge of emerging career paths, internships, mentorship opportunities, and holistic student development strategies.

Promoting career readiness among students and preparing them for future challenges is a major objective of this exercise of the CBSE. In alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, CBSE aims to develop a comprehensive career counselling framework that includes career awareness, mental health support, and professional guidance. This framework will empower educators and students to make informed decisions about career options.

Career and Capacity Building Programs (CBPs) will be tailored to enhance the skills and knowledge of counsellors and wellness teachers. A Career Summit, a one-day event, will be designed for approximately 1,000 participants, where experts, industry leaders, and professionals from various fields will come together to provide valuable insights on career development and guidance. The summit will feature panel discussions, workshops, and networking opportunities to help counsellors and teachers better understand the evolving career landscape and provide informed guidance to students.

An Alumni Meet and Guest Speaker Sessions will also be designed to bring together former students and industry experts to share their success stories, career paths, and insights with current educators. These sessions will be held regularly to keep counsellors and wellness teachers updated on real-world applications of career guidance, and provide them with the opportunity to network with industry professionals for continuous learning and inspiration.

A Digital Career Booklet will be prepared to serve as a comprehensive resource for career counselling, offering up-to-date information on various career options, qualifications, job opportunities, and growth sectors.
