‘Can’t speak Kannada? Come to Delhi’: Cars24 CEO stirs debate with hiring post

Vikram Chopra, CEO of used cars online marketplace Cars24, has stirred a major social media debate after sharing a job listing for engineers who want to “stay close to home,”  while referring to the national capital. Although it seemed like a straightforward hiring pitch, his post has now sparked a Delhi versus Bengaluru debate on X.

The job post invites applications from probable candidates who want to move from Bengaluru to Delhi. However, the reference to “knowing Kannada language” has sparked a major controversy.

In his post on X, Chopra shared an image that read, “Still can’t speak Kannada after years in Bengaluru? It’s OK. Aa jao Dilli. We are looking for k*****s engineers who wish to stay close to home.”

The image also shows a map of India, while featuring a plane heading toward Delhi. In the image, Bengaluru has been marked by a blue dot, while Delhi is represented with a red heart.

Along with the picture, Chopra wrote, “We are not saying Delhi NCR is better. Only that it really is. If you wish to come back, write to me at [email protected] with the subject – Delhi meri jaan”.

The apparently light-hearted post by Chopra, which was meant to draw people’s attention towards the job listing, instead triggered a massive Delhi vs Bengaluru debate on social media and went on to receive more than 4.5 lakh views.

“This is a tasteless advertisement. Makes me think less of cars24 employer brand and culture. There are more productive ways to highlight your qualities,” one person wrote on the comments section.

Another user said that “no one wants to leave Namma Bengaluru.” The user noted that if anybody is unable to speak in the native language then that’s a choice as “no one is forcing you to learn it.”

“If you learn also it’s good for you. I’m from Karnataka, but I live in Pune. I have learnt Marathi because it’s good to communicate with new people. After all you can’t accept people speak Hindi or English,” the comment read.

Meanwhile, another user asked Chopra to “prove 1 aspect in which Delhi NCR is better than Bengaluru,” adding that “I will work for you for free for 1 year.”

Another X user highlighted a June 2009 post by Chopra in which he said, “The most difficult thing in Delhi is to deal with its people.”

“You should, probably, delete this,” the user wrote while tagging the old post. To this, Chopra replied, “Tedha hai par mera hai.”
