On December 19, a team from the electricity department, accompanied by armed police, inspected Barq’s residence in Sambhal. During the inquiry, two electricity meters were seized as evidence of tampering.
Earlier, older meters had been removed, sealed, and sent for laboratory examination. The current meter at Barq’s residence reportedly displayed a reading of zero.
In addition to the power theft charges, Barq’s associates have been accused of threatening electricity department officials. His father, Mamluk-ur-Rehman Barq, has also been implicated for allegedly issuing threats.
Superintendent of Police (Sambhal) Krishna Kumar Bishnoi stated that Santosh Tripathi visited the senior Barq’s residence at 7:30 a.m. to inspect electrical equipment. The officials were reportedly obstructed by Barq’s father, who remarked, “We will see if the government changes.” Officials recorded the incident on video as evidence.
The FIR against Zia-ur-Rehman Barq mentions that laboratory tests revealed his house’s electricity meter had been bypassed, indicating illegal usage. He has been charged under Section 135 of the Electricity Act, 2003, which pertains to electricity theft and unauthorised use.
