The report shared by the Union Minister was based on the data received from several states and Union Territories and highlights the alarming rise in road fatalities. It shows that road accident fatalities across India jumped from 1,57,593 in 2018 to 1,68,491 in 2022, while the COVID-19 pandemic-affected period of 2020-21 also witnessed more than 2.92 lakh deaths, despite the nationwide lockdown.  Here’s taking a look at 10 states, where the most accidents occurred between 2018 and 2022 period: (PTI Image)

1. Uttar Pradesh: The north Indian state registered an alarming 1,08,882 deaths between 2018 and 2022 due to road accidents. Uttar Pradesh recorded 22,256 road accident fatalities in 2018, 22,655 in 2019, 19,149 in 2020, 21,227 in 2021 and 22,595 in 2022. (Image Reuters)

2. Tamil Nadu: With 84,316 deaths in the five years, the southern state was second on the list. Of the total road accident deaths in Tamil Nadu, 18,392 were registered in 2018, 18,129 in 2019, 14,527 in 2020, 15,384 in 2021 and 17,884 in 2022, the official data shows. (Image Reuters)

3. Maharashtra: Maharashtra, often in the spotlight due to viral videos of road accidents, is third on the list with 66,370 deaths. Of these, 13,261 were reported in 2018, 12,788 in 2019, 11,569 in 2020, 13,528 in 2021 and 15,224 in 2022. (Image Wikicommons)

4. Madhya Pradesh: Next on the list is Madhya Pradesh, which witnessed as many as 58,580 deaths due to road accidents between 2018 and 2022. Among these, 10,706 were in 2018, 11,249 in 2019, 11,141 in 2020, 12,057 in 2021 and 13,427 in 2022. (Image Wikicommons)

5. Karnataka: With 53,448 deaths, Karnataka, where India’s IT hub Bengaluru is famous worldwide for its traffic jams, has also been named on the list. The state saw 10,990 road accident fatalities in 2018, 10,958 in 2019, 9,760 in 2020, 10,038 in 2021 and 11,702 in 2022. (Image PTI)

6. Rajasthan: Among the states that witnessed the most accidents between 2018-2022, Rajasthan was sixth with 51,280 deaths. Rajasthan witnessed 10,320 road accidents-related deaths in 2018, 10,563 in 2019, 9,250 in 2020, 10,043 in 2021 and 11,104 in 2022. (Image X)

7. Andhra Pradesh: Next on the list was Andhra Pradesh with 39,058 deaths due to road accidents between 2018 and 2022. Of these, a total of 7,556 people lost their lives in 2018, 7,984 in 2019, 7,039 in 2020, 8,186 in 2021 and 8,293 in 2022. (PTI)

8. Gujarat: Following Andhra Pradesh closely is Gujarat, witnessing 36,626 deaths in the mentioned period. In Gujarat, 7,996 people lost their lives in road accidents in 2018, 7,390 in 2019, 6,170 in 2020, 7,452 in 2021 and 7,618 in 2022. (Image PTI)

9. Bihar: Bihar recorded 36,191 deaths from road accidents during 2018-2022. As many as 6,729 deaths were registered in 2018, 7,205 in 2019, 6,699 in 2020, 7,660 in 2021 and 8,898 in 2022. (Image Reuters)
