Who will be called World Champions if Gukesh vs Ding Liren is still tied after game 14

Just a few hours before the 13th installment of the Gukesh vs. Ding Liren World Chess Championships fight takes place, there are concerns about the result if the two ace players fail to break their tie after the 14th game.

The last two games will decide the fate of the World Chess Championship. Both players have won two games each, and the remaining games ended in draws.

Who will be win World Chess Champion if Gukesh vs Ding Liren is still tied after game 14?

If both the grandmasters are still tied up after game 14 then the champion will be decided by evaluating the faster time controls.

The pattern of these games is decided by FIDE. The tiebreak system for the World Chess Championship comes into play if the classical games (standard time control matches) end in a tied score. Here’s an outline of the typical tiebreak process:

What is the earnings structure for players if the World Chess Championship is decided in tiebreaks?

At the World Chess Championship, each player earns $200,000 for every classical game they win. Once the classical portion ends, the remaining prize fund is split equally between the two competitors. This means that by the conclusion of the classical games, both players have already secured approximately ₹3.4 crore (around $410,000) from their victories combined.

Five-time world champion across formats, Viswanathan Anand, called it a “very impressive game” while Liren himself said, “it was the best game that I have played in recent times.” While the mind games will go on in the last two games and a potential tiebreaker, American Hikaru Nakamura and world number one Magnus Carlsen feel that the balance had tilted slightly in Liren’s favour.

“Ding did not have to calculate a single line in this whole game, he is being able to play the game based on positional understanding where he is very good,” said Carlsen on his new youtube channel.

It might be a tightrope walk for Gukesh but the young Indian is likely to go out there and give his best in the penultimate game.

In case of another draw, there is a decent chance that the chess buffs will get to see the tie-break games.
