PM Modi inaugurates ‘Ashtalakshmi Mahotsav’ to celebrate Northeast India’s cultural, economic vibrancy

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, December 6, inaugurated the Ashtalakshmi Mahotsav at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, a grand celebration highlighting the cultural, social, and economic vibrancy of India’s eight northeastern states. Named after the eight forms of prosperity, the event celebrates the rich traditions and development of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland, Mizoram, Tripura, and Sikkim.

Addressing the gathering, PM Modi said, “Today, the diverse colors of the Northeast are making a beautiful rainbow in the national capital.” He emphasised the region’s pivotal role in connecting India to South and East Asia. “North East connects us to the limitless potential of South Asia and East Asia,” he noted, adding that India’s global focus on culture and trade finds a vital link in the Northeast.

Focus on Development

The Prime Minister highlighted the significant strides in the region’s development, including the establishment of the first AIIMS in the Northeast and India’s first National Sports University in Manipur. He criticised previous governments for neglecting the region due to its lower electoral influence. “Earlier, developmental works were measured by the number of votes, but our government focuses on the development for all,” Modi said, crediting Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s government for initiating the Ministry for the Development of North Eastern Region.

A Cultural and Economic Extravaganza

Union Minister for Communications and Development of the North Eastern Region, Jyotiraditya Scindia, highlighted the Mahotsav’s role in promoting the region’s textile industry, artisanal crafts, and Geographical Indication (GI) products. The event features daily cultural performances, including Assam’s Bihu dances and Nagaland’s folk dances, showcasing the rich cultural tapestry of the Northeast.

The Symphony of Ashtalakshmi, performed by artists from the eight states, represented the region’s musical heritage and was a key highlight of the event. Children from the Northeast presented an “Ashtalakshmi Plant,” a sapling symbolising unity, grown in soil from all eight states, to the Prime Minister.

Business and Investment Opportunities

The event also focuses on fostering long-term business relationships. Artisans are showcasing their products to buyers, with expectations of substantial on-spot sales and bulk orders. Investors are engaging with government representatives to explore opportunities in textiles, handicrafts, agriculture, and tourism.

A special fashion show featuring fusion designs, such as Muga silk gowns and Eri silk stoles, underscores the region’s textile innovation. Top designers have collaborated with local artisans, and panel discussions on sustainable fashion and the global potential of the region’s handlooms add a forward-looking perspective.

Transformative Infrastructure Growth

Officials emphasised the transformative infrastructure developments in the Northeast, including expansions in road, rail, and air connectivity, mega bridges, and semiconductor industries. These initiatives are positioning the region as a gateway to Southeast Asia and a hub for trade, tourism, and industry.

Recent advancements in energy, transportation, and digital connectivity are overcoming the region’s historical challenges of isolation. “These developments not only address long-standing issues but also set the stage for future growth and prosperity,” an official remarked.

The Ashtalakshmi Mahotsav, running until December 8, is a blend of cultural celebration and economic potential, reinforcing Northeast India’s integral role in the country’s progress.
