Cyclone Fengal remains stationary near Puducherry, to weaken in next 3 hours: IMD

Cyclone Fengal, which made landfall near Puducherry on November 30, remained stationary over the region and is expected to weaken into a deep depression within three hours, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported on Sunday (December 1), according to PTI.

Operations at Chennai airport, which had been suspended earlier on Sunday, resumed past midnight. However, numerous flights faced disruptions, with 24 domestic flights canceled and 26 international flights delayed, officials said.

Puducherry recorded its highest-ever rainfall of 46 cm during the storm, IMD Regional Meteorological Centre Additional Director General S Balachandran said in a Sunday morning update at 7:30 am. The previous record for the union territory was 21 cm, recorded on October 31, 2004.

Cyclone Fengal began making landfall near Puducherry around 5:30 pm on Saturday and completed the process between 10:30 pm and 11:30 pm, Balachandran added. The cyclone currently lies near Puducherry and is forecast to move westward slowly, further weakening over north coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

Tamil Nadu’s Villupuram district also witnessed heavy rainfall, with Mailam recording 50 cm between 8:30 am on November 30 and 5:30 am on December 1, making it one of the most affected regions.

Despite resumption of operations at Chennai airport, passengers experienced significant disruptions as flights were either delayed or canceled due to adverse weather conditions, officials confirmed.
