Arunachal Pradesh focusing on sustainable tourism to attract domestic and international travellers
Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu is please with the state government’s initiatives on prioritising sustainable tourism to draw visitors both domestic and foreign. At the opening ceremony of the 12th International Tourism Mart (ITM) in Kaziranga, Assam, Khandu shared his vision for the future of Arunachal Pradesh’s tourism, aiming to position the state as a leading global destination.

He emphasised the state’s unique combination of natural beauty, cultural richness, and adventure opportunities that would attract more tourists. “We are focused on upgrading infrastructure, improving connectivity, and developing iconic trekking routes, trails, and festivals that will attract both domestic and international tourists. We also aim to empower local communities through initiatives like homestays and skill development,” he added.

“By leveraging the state’s diverse ecosystems, Arunachal Pradesh intends to set an example for responsible tourism. Our goal is not only to increase tourism numbers but to create a lasting, positive impact that benefits the economy, preserves cultural heritage, and protects the environment for future generations,” Khandu explained, according to PTI.

Highlighting the state’s strategic location, which shares borders with Myanmar (440 km), Tibet (1080 km), and Bhutan (160 km), Khandu noted that the Army plays a key role in tourism development due to the state’s low population and proximity to international borders.

“Through the Vibrant Village Programme (VVP), launched by the Union Home Ministry to develop border villages, we are collaborating with the Army and paramilitary forces to enhance sustainable tourism in these areas,” he added.

Khandu also pointed out the immense potential for adventure tourism in Arunachal Pradesh, from trekking in untouched landscapes to rafting in wild rivers. “We remain committed to promoting sustainable tourism, empowering local communities, and building a responsible tourism ecosystem,” he said.

In the last decade, Arunachal Pradesh has witnessed a 205 percent increase in tourist arrivals, demonstrating significant growth in the tourism sector.

He encouraged stakeholders such as tour operators, investors, and influencers to explore the state’s potential and collaborate on innovative tourism projects. He assured them that the state would provide a supportive environment for sustainable tourism ventures.

The ITM event was inaugurated by Union Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Khandu in attendance. Khandu was accompanied by State Tourism Minister PD Sona and his advisor, Mopi Mihu.
