Delhi: Air quality drops to ‘severe’ category, trains delayed due to poor visibility
Delhites woke up to another morning of smog and foggy weather on Saturday, as the Air Quality Index (AQI) in the national capital once again dropped to the ‘severe’ category. As per the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the AQI in Delhi was 420 at 9 am on Saturday, November 23, under the ‘severe’ category.

At 9 am, the AQI in Anand Vihar was 456, Ashok Vihar 454, Bawana 456, DTU 414, and RK Puram 456, all in the ‘severe’ category.

The air quality in several parts of the city, including IGI Airport 397, ITO 383, Lodhi Road 360, and Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium 383, was in the ‘very poor’ category.

The city has been battling deteriorating air quality and thick smog for the past few days. As a result, railway services were severely impacted due to visibility issues, causing delays in train movements. For instance, Shatabdi Express (Kanpur to New Delhi) was delayed by 39 minutes, Hazrat Nizamuddin Humsafar Express by one hour 50 minutes, Jansardhan Express from Anand Vihar terminal to Danapur was delayed by 11 hours and one minute and Runicha Express from Old Delhi to Jaisalmer stood delayed by 24 minutes.

Meanwhile, a layer of toxic foam and smog was seen on the surface of the Yamuna River at Kalindi Kunj in Delhi.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, New Delhi, the city’s temperature was 13 degrees Celsius at 8:30 a.m., and the humidity was 97%.

The air quality index between 0 and 50 is considered good, 51-100 satisfactory, 101-200 moderate, 201-300 poor, 301-400 very poor, and 401-500 severe. According to the CPCB, the AQI in the ‘severe’ category can affect healthy people and seriously impact those with existing diseases. The AQI measured in the ‘very poor’ category can cause respiratory illness on prolonged exposure.

Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai visited the Narela-Singhu border on November 22 to inspect the implementation of stage IV of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP).

Stage IV of GRAP prohibits the operation of Delhi-registered BS-IV and below diesel-operated medium goods vehicles (MGVs) and heavy goods trucks (HGVs), except for essential services.
