Ajit Pawar, who secured a win from the Baramati seat in the previously held seven Assembly elections, is eying an eighth consecutive term from here. He took over the reins of the family stronghold from his uncle Sharad Pawar.

Although he majorly followed his uncle in politics, Ajit parted ways with him in July last year and joined the ruling Mahayuti, including Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena.

Ajit Pawar’s rebellion led to a split in NCP, with him taking control of the party as well as its iconic clock symbol, while Sharad Pawar settled with NCP (SP).

The NCP (SP) has fielded Yugendra Pawar, the son of Ajit Pawar’s brother Shrinivas Pawar.

This comes months after the Baramati parliamentary constituency witnessed Ajit Pawar fielding his wife Sunetra Pawar against Supriya Sule, daughter of Sharad Pawar in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Sule ultimately defeated Sunetra Pawar by more than 1.58 lakh votes.

During the last Assembly election in 2019, the BJP bagged the maximum, 105 out of 288 seats, while the then undivided Shiv Sena received 56 seats. The Congress and NCP got 44 and 54 seats.

After the fallout of the BJP and Shiv Sena alliance over the issue of the Chief Minister’s post, the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) was formed and Uddhav Thackeray took charge. However, the government did not last long as the Eknath Shinde-led camp rebelled against the Shiv Sena in June 2022, resulting in a split in the party.
