More Indians could face deportation in the coming months, with special flights expected as authorities verify their identities, according to sources.
Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav stated that the state government would facilitate the returnees’ arrival and set up assistance counters at the airport.
Expressing disappointment over the US government’s decision, Punjab NRI Affairs Minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal said these individuals had contributed to the American economy and should have been considered for permanent residency instead of deportation.
He noted that many had initially entered the US on valid work permits, which later expired, leading to their undocumented status.
Dhaliwal also announced plans to meet External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar next week to discuss the concerns of Punjabis living in the US.
He urged people to avoid illegal immigration routes, emphasising the importance of education, skill development, and legal migration pathways to access global opportunities.
Following a tightening of immigration policies under US President Donald Trump, law enforcement agencies have intensified their crackdown on illegal immigrants. Many individuals from Punjab, who had used “donkey routes” (illegal migration networks) by paying large sums to agents, are now being deported.
