In the notice, LIC stated, “It has come to our attention that fraudulent media applications are being circulated under the name of LIC of India. We hereby urge all policyholders and customers to conduct transactions via official channels. Kindly be advised that LIC shall not be held responsible for payments made via any alternative digital platform.”

Over the past few years, digital frauds targeting insurance customers have become prevalent. Fraudsters create fake applications and websites that mimic legitimate insurers, tricking users into sharing sensitive information or making payments to unauthorized entities.

These scams often involve:

Fake payment portals: Fraudsters create apps that resemble LIC’s digital platforms and request users to enter policy details and make premium payments, which are then redirected to fraudulent accounts.

Phishing scams: Customers receive fake emails or SMS messages containing links to counterfeit LIC websites, prompting them to enter login credentials and financial details.

Impersonation calls: Scammers posing as insurance representatives call customers, offering fake discounts or bonus schemes, and demand online payments.

How policyholders can stay safe

To avoid falling victim to such frauds, customers should take the following precautions:

Verify digital platforms: Always ensure transactions are done through official channels.

Check URLs and apps: Before entering any details, cross-check the URL to confirm it belongs to the official domain. Download mobile applications only from trusted sources such as Google Play Store or Apple App Store.

Beware of unsolicited communications: Do not respond to calls, emails, or messages from unknown sources.

Secure personal information: Never share sensitive policy details, OTPs, or bank credentials with anyone claiming to be an official.

Report suspicious activity: If you come across any fraudulent apps or transactions, report them to customer care and relevant cybercrime authorities.
