The state is traditionally divided into five distinct regions – Konkan-Mumbai, Western Maharashtra, North Maharashtra, Marathwada & Vidarbha.
The BJP-led three-party alliance swept all the five regions, with the saffron party gaining 27 seats. On the other hand, the Maha Vikas Aghadi folded up with just 46 seats, as the Congress lost 29 seats to register its worst performance since 1962.
Region | Total Seats | Mahayuti | MVA | Big Winner | Big Loser |

Marathwada | 46 | 40 | 5 | BJP (19 Seats) | Congress – 1 Seat (-7) |
Western Maharashtra | 58 | 42 | 10 | BJP (24 Seats) | Congress – 1 Seat (- 10) |

The story of BJP’s meteoric rise since 2014 and the Congress’ declining fortunes can be tracked through the regions.

Maharashtra’s political history shows that the Congress enjoyed near-total domination until 1995, when the Sena-BJP alliance came to power. The Congress began to weaken in the 1990s as coalition politics began to take shape. Moreover, the rise of Hindutva and formation of the NCP undermined the party. Consequently, no single party could dominate every region of Maharashtra until 2024.

Prior to 2014, when the BJP emerged as a major force for the first time, Vidarbha was a Congress bastion. Western Maharashtra was an NCP stronghold, while Marathwada had several pockets where the Congress & the Shiv Sena held huge influence. The NCP emerged as the single-largest party in North Maharashtra for a decade, while the Konkan-Mumbai region remained largely with the Sena.
Except for the Konkan-Mumbai region, where the united Shiv Sena remained strong, every other region flipped in favour of the BJP in 2014. This trend continued in 2019 too, except in Western Maharashtra where the NCP regained some of its strength.
