Maharashtra election results reactions: Devendra Fadnavis remains tight-lipped on CM post as Shinde celebrates victory
In a high-stakes electoral battle that kept Maharashtra on edge, the ruling Mahayuti alliance emerged victorious in the state Assembly elections, securing a clear majority in the 288-member house. As the Election Commission of India declared the results on November 23, reactions from political leaders across the spectrum highlighted the magnitude of the outcome.

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde described the Mahayuti’s victory as a “historic day” for Maharashtra. Addressing supporters, he expressed gratitude to the state’s voters and acknowledged Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s unwavering support. “Our government was the common man’s government. Women, children, and farmers were the centre point for us. For me, the full form of CM is not Chief Minister, it’s Common Man,” Shinde said.

Shinde also took a swipe at the previous Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government, claiming his administration had resolved issues left behind by its tenure. “We removed all the stays which MVA made during their governance,” he added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the Mahayuti alliance and highlighted the significance of the people’s trust. “Heartfelt gratitude to my sisters and brothers of Maharashtra, especially the youth and women of the state, for a historic mandate to the NDA,” he tweeted. “United we will soar even higher!”

Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis called the day a defining moment for the state but refrained from commenting on his potential return as Chief Minister.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath hailed the results as a testament to PM Modi’s vision and leadership. “Today the results of #MaharashtraElection2024 and #JharkhandAssemblyElection2024 have come and the results of by-polls have also come…PM Modi’s vision and leadership have helped us to win. The public has shown their trust in PM Modi’s vision and policies…I congratulate all the winning candidates,” he said.

Shiv Sena leader Shaina NC described the Mahayuti’s triumph as a “historic victory.” She credited the people’s faith in the alliance’s development agenda. “People have seen our development work and we talk about development. People’s love has turned into votes, and we will all work for a ‘Viksit Bharat’. The opposition only did appeasement politics,” she said.

Congress leader TS Singh Deo admitted the Congress alliance faced an unexpected defeat in the state. “The Congress alliance has faced defeat in the Maharashtra assembly elections by an unexpected margin… Something happened in Maharashtra that I did not expect… Ajit Pawar looked weaker than Sharad Pawar… We will introspect on how we won in one state and lost in the other,” he said. He also acknowledged the BJP’s advantage in terms of resources.

Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal expressed disbelief over the outcome, saying, “Maharashtra result is unbelievable. We are examining the result.”

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Anand Dubey conceded that the alliance failed to anticipate the Mahayuti’s “tsunami.” “In a democracy, the public is the most important. We respect the decision of the public and congratulate those who formed the government in Maharashtra,” he said. “We need to introspect where we went wrong. We never expected such a huge defeat… It is very unfortunate that we are not even in a position to sit in the opposition. We will win the trust of the public again.”
