Meet Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Wayanad’s newly-elected Lok Sabha MP
Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will succeed her brother Rahul Gandhi as the next Member of Parliament (MP) from the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat in Kerala. According to the Election Commission, Priyanka won by a margin of 4,10,931 with 6,22 338 votes. LDF’s Sathyan Mokeri was behind her with 2,11,407 votes and NDA’s Navya Haridas was in the third spot with 1,99,309 votes.

Priyanka also surpassed Rahul Gandhi’s victory margin on this seat. Rahul had got 6,47,445 votes and won by a margin of 3,64,422 votes against his nearest rival, CPI’s Annie Raja, in the LS polls this year. In 2019, he had got 7,06,367 votes and had won by a margin of 4,31,770 votes.

The Wayanad by-election was necessitated after Rahul Gandhi’s resignation. He decided to represent Rae Bareli in the Lok Sabha and vacated the seat for his sister. In total, 16 candidates contested from Wayanad.

Personal life

Born on January 12, 1972,

Priyanka Gandhi is the daughter of former prime minister, late Rajiv Gandhi, and veteran Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sonia Gandhi. Her elder brother is Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi. She attended the Modern School and Convent of Jesus and Mary in New Delhi.

Later, she completed a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the Jesus and Mary College of the University of Delhi, followed by a master’s degree in Buddhist studies.

She is the granddaughter of former prime minister Indira Gandhi, while her great-grandfather was Jawaharlal Nehru, the first prime minister of India. Priyanka is married to businessman Robert Vadra and together they have two children.

Politics

She currently serves as a general secretary in the All India Congress Committee (AICC), the central decision-making body of Congress. Earlier, she served as the party’s general secretary in charge of the eastern part of Uttar Pradesh.

During the initial phase of her career, she mostly played down plans to join active politics. However, she was often seen campaigning for her mother and brother during the elections in Rae Bareli and Amethi. Later on, she became an active member of the party.

With her entry, all three Gandhis will be seen in Parliament in the upcoming Winter Session, scheduled to begin on November 25.
