Ahead of 76th Republic Day, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto receives ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto arrived in India on Saturday for his first state visit. He received a ceremonial welcome at the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan before President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted him.

Speaking on the occasion, President Subianto expressed his gratitude towards India, acknowledging its support for Indonesia’s independence struggle. He emphasised strengthening closer cooperation and closer partnership with India.

“Indonesia considers India a very great friend. India was one of the first countries, maybe the first country to recognize our independence, to support us in our struggle for independence, we will never forget what India did to help us,” he said.

“I am very honoured today and I am doubly honoured that tomorrow I will be the chief guest at your Republic Day parade...I’m committed to promoting closer cooperation and closer partnership with India. That is my determination,” Subianto added.

Earlier, the Ministry of External Affairs stated that the visit would further strengthen the India-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

In a post on X, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal wrote, “A warm welcome to President Prabowo Subianto @prabowo of Indonesia as he arrives in New Delhi on his first State Visit to India. Received by MoS @PmargheritaBJP at the airport. President @prabowo will be the Chief Guest for India’s 76th Republic Day celebrations. This visit will further strengthen the India-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.”

Chief Guest at Republic Day celebrations

As part of his visit, President Subianto will attend the 76th Republic Day celebrations as the Chief Guest. During the Republic Day parade at the Kartavya Path, a 352-member marching and band contingent from Indonesia will also participate. It’s the first time an Indonesian contingent will participate in a national day parade abroad.

This state visit, scheduled for January 25-26, 2025, provides an opportunity for both nations to assess bilateral relations and discuss regional and global problems of mutual concern. The two countries’ political relationship was strengthened throughout their joint struggle for independence.

India and Indonesia have a long history of cultural and trade relations spanning over two millennia. Both nations have grown closer in recent years with a Defence Cooperation Agreement signed in May 2018.
