It’s Hornbill Festival’s silver jubilee and Nagaland is making grand preparations
Nagaland is making grand preparations for the silver jubilee edition of the Hornbill Festival, officials said on November 23. The festival will run from December 1 to 10, and many international and domestic tourists are expected to arrive in the Northeastern state to experience the rich and vibrant culture of Nagaland’s 18 major tribes.

The festival is held at the scenic Kisama Heritage Village, located about 12 km from the state’s capital of Kohima. In 2023, the festival attracted an impressive 1.54 lakh visitors. “With only a week left, the construction of the Naga ‘morung’ (traditional huts), which represent the map of Nagaland, has been completed, with final touches now being applied,” said Veyielo Doulo, Director of Tourism, told PTI.

The venue has seen new developments and new permanent structures have been developed for the convenience of travellers. Being the milestone silver jubilee edition, the festival has gained international support, with countries like Japan, Peru, and Wales partnering with Nagaland.

“Japan will participate in cultural and musical performances, as well as conduct workshops on handicrafts. I hope this initiative will strengthen our ties further. Peruvian artists and cultural performers will also take part in various events. I am confident that this collaboration will foster stronger bilateral relations,” said Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on X.

In preparation for the festival, the state government has launched a massive beautification and cleanup initiative across Nagaland.

Government employees were engaged throughout the day in cleaning and enhancing the appearance of offices and various areas of the state capital. Local residents also joined the effort, cleaning their neighborhoods and wards, while business establishments remained closed until noon.

Chief Secretary J Alam visited Kisama to inspect the ongoing preparations. During his visit, he met with contractors and officials from various departments, emphasizing the importance of completing all projects on schedule.
