The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction is slated for November 24 and November 25 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, scheduled to begin at 3 pm (IST), where 10 teams will be looking to shape up their squads for the upcoming season of the IPL which is expected to commence on March 14 with the final scheduled for May 25, next year. The 10 teams can spend a cumulative sum of Rs 641.50 crore. There are possible 204 slots to be filled. Over 500 players from India and abroad will be competing for these 204 slots.
Before the gravel starts coming down and the IPL teams start raising the paddle to get the best of the players in their fold, let’s take a look at the teams that have the biggest purse for the 2025 IPL mega auction.
No 1. Punjab Kings (PBKS) | Auction Purse: Rs 110.5 crore | Punjab Kings have the biggest purse for these auction. The team decided to retain only two uncapped players (Shashank Sharma and Prabhsimran Singh) and release every other member from their IPL 2024 squad. The Punjab Kings’ table will be the most active during the auction as they aim for some marquee signings and a revamped squad. Punjab are heavily linked with Rishabh Pant.
No 2. Royal Challengers Bengaluru | Auction Purse: Rs 83 crore | Royal Challengers Bengaluru have the second purse for the auction. RCB retained Virat Kohli (capped), Rajat Patidar (capped) and Yash Dayal (uncapped) from their previous squad. With just three retention, RCB have over Rs 80 crore to splash. No 3. Delhi Capitals | Auction Purse: Rs 73 crore | In a surprise move Delhi Capitals let go of Rishabh Pant, the face of the franchisee and the team’s captain. They have retained Axar Patel (capped), Kuldeep Yadav (capped), Tristan Stubbs (capped) and Abhishek Porel (uncapped). It remains to be seen if the team will use its Right-to-Match card during the auction to get back Pant or will they look for another wicketkeeper batsman who can also lead the team. No 4. Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) | Auction Purse: Rs 69 crore | Since last season, there was a growing friction between KL Rahul and the team management. According to reports the team management had hinted that it was not happy with Rahul’s approach. Rahul too said in a recent interview that he wants to move to a team where he can find some freedom. In stead of retaining Rahul, LSG has held back Nicholas Pooran (capped), Ravi Bishnoi (capped), Mayank Yadav (capped), Ayush Badoni (uncapped) and Mohsin Khan (uncapped). No 5. Gujarat Titans (GT) | Auction Purse: Rs 69 crore | Gujarat Titans have retained Rashid Khan (capped), Shubman Gill (capped), Sai Sudharsan (capped), Rahul Tewatia (uncapped) and Sharukh Khan (uncapped). The 2022 champions did not retain Mohammed Shami. It will be interesting to see if Shami’s recent injury record prohibits the team from using the RTM card to get the Indian pacer back into the squad.
No 6. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) | Auction Purse: Rs 55 crore | Chennai Super Kings retention list was the most expected one. The five-time champions retained Ruturaj Gaikwad (capped), Ravindra Jadeja (capped), Shivam Dube (capped), Matheesha Pathirana (capped), and MS Dhoni (uncapped). Although Dhoni has said that he sees himself playing in the IPL for next few years, the team will be looking for a young wicketkeeper for the future. The fans are also keen to know for which of the two New Zealanders, Devon Conway or Rachin Ravindra, will the team use its RTM card.
No 7. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) | Auction Purse: Rs 51 crore | IPL 2024 was all about Kolkara Knight Riders. First they gabbed the headlines during the auction by making Mitchell Starc the most expensive player in the league’s history. The team bought the Aussie pacer for a staggering sum of Rs. 24.50 crore. A few months later, they won the league under the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer. Interestingly, neither Starc nor Iyer features in KKR retention list. No 8. Mumbai Indians (MI) | Auction Purse: Rs 45 crore | Mumbai Indians finished at the bottom of the points table last season under the leadership of Hardik Pandya. But that has not stopped the team from retaining the star all-rounder. Along with Pandya the team has retained their former captain Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah and Tilak Varma. No 9. Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) | Auction Purse: 45 crore | Sunrisers Hyderabad have made the most expensive retention as they retained South Africa’s hard-hitting batter Heinrich Klaasen for Rs 23 crore. Other players that have been retained by the Orange Army are Pat Cummins (capped), Travis Head (capped), Abhishek Sharma (capped), Nitish Reddy (capped). SRH will look to get back Washington Sundar.
No 10. Rajasthan Royals (RR) | Auction Purse: Rs 41 crore | Rajasthan Royals has the smallest purse size for this auction. The winners of the first-ever IPL have retained Sanju Samson (capped), Yashasvi Jaiswal (capped), Riyan Parag (capped), Dhruv Jurel (capped), Shimron Hetmyer (capped) and Sandeep Sharma (uncapped). By retaining six players RR have no RTM cards unavailable for them for the auction. The Royals have let go key players like Yuzvendra Chahal, Ravichandran Ashwin and Trent Boult.
