Renominated by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Kathore was first elected from this seat in 2009 on a Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) ticket. He defeated then-sitting MLA Gotiram Pawar, who contested as an Independent after NCP denied him the ticket.

After joining the BJP, Kathore secured a win from Murbad in the 2014 and 2019 Assembly polls.

Earlier, there were reports of tiff within the Mahayuti, with Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena objecting to the BJP candidate from Murbad and three other seats (Kalyan East, Thane and Airoli). The ruling alliance also has Ajit Pawar-led NCP.

On behalf of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), the Sharad Pawar-led NCP-SP has nominated Subhash Pawar, who joined the party from Shiv Sena several weeks ago. His father, Gotiram Pawar, has been an MLA from Murbad Assembly four times.

This Assembly constituency comprises Murbad, Kalyan, Ambernath and Badlapur — which made headlines earlier this year over the sexual abuse of two girls at a school allegedly by a janitor.

In August, the agitated parents as well as residents protested at the Badlapur railway station and stopped multiple trains. Nearly a month later, the accused was “gunned down in self-defence” by the Thane Police, who stated that he shot at them while trying to escape.

Activist Sangeeta Chendvankar, who played a key role in bringing the incident to light, has been given a ticket from the seat by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS).
