
The same squad will play in the three-match ODI series against England that begins from February 6.
Bumrah has been struggling with back problems. The trouble started brewing during India’s Test tour of Australia and he did not bowl on the final day of the fifth Test played in Sydney.
“Bumrah has been told to off-load for five weeks after and he won’t be available for the first two ODIs against England. We are waiting on his fitness and will know his status in early February from the medical team,” Agarkar said during a press conference. Harshit Rana has been picked as the stand-by bowler in case Bumrah isn’t fit enough to bowl.
Meanwhile, Shami, who was earlier included in India’s squad for the five-match T20I series against England that gets underway next week, is set to play an ODI match in over a year. The pacer’s last match in the Indian jersey was the final of the 2023 ICC Men ODI World Cup against Australia.
Young batter Yashasvi Jaiswal earned his maiden ODI call-up as he was included in the squad. The 23-year-old has only played Tests and T20Is for India since making his international debut in 2023. He impressed during India’s arduous tour of Australia as he scored 391 runs in five Tests and was the team’s highest run-scorer. With 1478 runs, Jaiswal was the second highest run-scorer in 2024.
India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, New Zealand, Australia, England, South Africa and Afghanistan are the eight nations that are set to participate in the 50-over tournament. The tournament will be played majorly in Pakistan and partly in the UAE. Karachi, Lahore and Rawalpindi are the three cities holding the matches in Pakistan.
Unlike the seven other participating teams of the tournament, India will not be in Pakistan to play its matches. Instead, the team will be travelling to the UAE to play its Champions Trophy.Dubai’s international cricket stadium is set to hold all the India matches.
The team refused to travel to Pakistan citing security conditions prevailing in the country. The Pakistan Cricket Board then had to settle for a hybrid model where India were allowed to play its matches in the UAE. In return, Pakistan too will play its matches of the ICC tournaments to be hosted by India in a “co-host” country.
India are part of Group A alongside Pakistan, Bangladesh and New Zealand.
In case India qualifies for the semi-final, India will feature in the 1st semifinal that will be played in Dubai.
India will open its Champions Trophy campaign with a match against Bangladesh on February 20. That will be followed by the high-profile clash against Pakistan before the team rounds-off its group-stage campaign with a match against New Zealand on March 2.
India last won the Champions Trophy in 2013 when the tournament was held in England and Wales.
