Visa emphasises the need for increased awareness and provides tips to safeguard against these threats.

Digital arrest scams

Fraudsters impersonate telecom or banking authorities, accusing victims of involvement in illegal activities like contraband delivery. They intimidate victims into sharing personal or financial information.

Visa advises, “Legitimate officials will never coerce or demand payments over the phone. Stay calm, request official documentation, and report such incidents to the Cybercrime Helpline (1930) or the NCRP portal.”

Scholarship scams

Fraudsters exploit students’ need for financial aid by offering fake scholarships, demanding upfront payments, or collecting sensitive details.

Visa urges students to verify organisations thoroughly, adding, “Avoid scholarships requiring unverified payments or personal information.”

QR code scams

QR codes are convenient but can be manipulated to steal data or redirect users to malicious sites. Visa reminds users, “Never scan QR codes hastily. Verify the sender and remember, you don’t need to scan a QR code to receive payments.”

Crypto and investment scams

Cryptocurrency scams entice young investors with promises of high returns and low risks.

Visa cautions, “If an investment opportunity sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Research thoroughly and avoid schemes you don’t understand.”

Online shopping scams

Fake e-commerce sites advertise unreal discounts to trick shoppers into buying counterfeit goods or paying for undelivered products.

Visa recommends sticking to trusted platforms and using secure payment methods.

“Visa card payments are equipped with robust fraud protection features like tokenisation and two-factor authentication for added security,” the report states.
