Thick fog engulfs Delhi NCR as cold wave continues, major travel disruptions expected

A thick blanket of fog shrouded Delhi and surrounding areas on Saturday, January 11, as North India endured ongoing cold wave conditions. Visibility was reduced to nearly zero in parts of the national capital region, including Delhi, Ghaziabad, and Noida, causing major disruptions to travel.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for Delhi NCR, forecasting moderate to dense fog for the day.

According to IMD data, Delhi recorded a temperature of 10.6°C at 8:30 am on Saturday. The department also predicted cloudy skies, followed by possible rainfall and thunderstorms in the city.

In addition to fog, the weather agency expects smog or moderate fog in most areas, with dense fog in isolated spots, especially during the evening and night.

The predicted maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to be around 15°C and 8°C, respectively.

Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) reported delays of over 100 flights due to low visibility, and train services are also facing significant disruptions.

The airport informed that low visibility procedures are in place, assuring that flight operations remain normal.

However, passengers are advised to check with their airlines for updated flight information, especially as flights not compliant with Category III (CAT III) may be affected.

Meanwhile, the Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi reached the ‘severe’ category on Friday, peaking at over 400 in the early morning and falling to 397 by 4 p.m.

The weather department also forecasts dense to very dense fog conditions to continue to prevail during night/early morning hours in some parts of Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh, as well as in isolated pockets of East Uttar Pradesh and East Rajasthan over the coming days.

In its daily bulletin, the IMD said that there will be a rise in minimum temperatures by 2-3℃ over Northwest India during the next 3 days and a gradual fall by 2-4℃ thereafter.
