Tandang Sora Women’s Museum, a newly opened museum in Quezon City, pays homage to the late Filipina revolutionary, Melchora Aquino.
According to Kuya Kim’s report on “24 Oras,” Friday, the museum houses an exhibit that showcases her important role in Philippine history, as well as some items from the past.
“Ang museum ay pinangalanan nating Tandang Sora Women’s Museum dahil tinitingala natin si Tandang Sora. Ito ay na-inspire ng kaniyang mga virtues nga, mapagkalinga, matulungin, mapagserbisyo, at higit doon din ay ang kaniyang katapangan,” Tandang Sora Women’s Museum curator and artist Sandra Torrijos said.
It has a Tandang Sora Section, where her memorabilia can be found, and an area that gives importance to the contribution of women for our nation from past to present.
“Herstorical siya. Nagsisimula ang concept sa babaylan, mga kababaihan noong araw, ay may pagkapantay-pantay sila bago dumating ang Espanyol. From there, umikot na tayo sa mga kababaihan na lumaban sa rebolusyon, hanggang sa contemporary women’s movement,” Sandra said.
She added that it will be an ongoing recording of women’s stories.
The museum is currently on its soft opening and will have its hard opening on February 19, Tandang Sora’s death anniversary.
Every year, the country celebrates her birthday on the sixth day of January.
Citing scholar Dr. Jim Richardson, Kuya Kim said that her real exact birthday is on January 6, 1836, making her 189 years old.
She was called Ina ng Himagsikan for helping the Katipuneros during the Spanish occupation in the Philippines.
Before Josefa Llanes Escoda and former President Corazon Aquino, Tandang Sora was the first woman depicted on Philippine currency.
Her portrait was printed on P100 bills used from 1951 to 1966.
