Delhi weather today: 4 flights cancelled, 157 delayed at IGI Airport due to dense fog, low visibility

As north India battles a severe cold wave, a thick blanket of fog engulfed Delhi and its surrounding areas on Wednesday, January 8. The severe cold wave and dense fog have brought travel to a standstill, with commuters facing significant challenges. It significantly reduced visibility at airports, disrupting flight operations.

As per data from FlightRadar24 at 08:20 am, Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) reported four flight cancellations due to the dense fog and low visibility. Furthermore, 118 departing flights and 39 arrival flights were delayed at the airport.

Delhi Airport issued an advisory on X, saying landings and take-offs were underway, but flights that weren’t CAT III A compliant may get affected. The authorities further requested the passengers to contact their concerned airline for the latest information.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted cold conditions at isolated places and mainly clear skies in the city. The Met Office also said smog or moderate fog at most places with dense fog at isolated places likely in the morning, followed by smog or shallow fog likely in the evening and night.

The temperatures would drop further beginning Wednesday, with the minimum temperature in Delhi reaching 5 degrees Celsius by Friday. The IMD has issued an orange warning for dense to very dense fog on Wednesday, with a yellow alert for Thursday and Friday.

The temperature in the national capital at 8:30 am was 8.4 degrees Celsius. The maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 16 and 08 degrees Celsius.

According to data from the Central Pollution Control Board, the air quality in the national capital remained ‘very poor’ on Wednesday, with an AQI of 324 at 9 am.

The weather agency also forecasts that very dense fog conditions will continue to prevail during night/early morning hours in some parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Uttar Pradesh from January 8 to 10.

Additionally, cold wave conditions are predicted in isolated pockets of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Rajasthan, north Madhya Pradesh and west Rajasthan on January 8 and in Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh during January 8-9.
