Gordon Thornton revealed that he was blindsided when his estranged wife Mia Thornton recently announced their separation after 11 years of marriage.
The Real Housewives Of Potomac star Mia, 38, officially announced that she and Gordon, 71, had separated on Friday in a statement to People.
A source close to Gordon told TMZ in an article on Sunday that he was blindsided when handed court documents in mid-August that signaled her intent to legally separate.
Gordon also has been upset over Mia’s public handling of their marital status especially after portraying their relationship positively recently on social media.
Sources claim that an irritated Gordon has not signed the papers yet.
The Real Housewives Of Potomac star — who recently spoke about the ‘promiscuous things’ she did in her youth — began her separation announcement by stating: ‘Like all marriages, ours has had its ups and downs.’
Mia went on to state that she, as well as Gordon, were primarily concerned about the well-being of their loved ones.
‘At this time, Gordon and I are separated, but my family is my number one priority, and I am committed to doing whatever it takes to make sure we are okay,’ she said.
The reality television figure then requested that her fans grant her the ability to navigate her separation in peace.
‘We ask that you respect our privacy and give us the time and space to figure things out,’ she said.
Mia and Gordon initially met during a charity event that was held at a strip club in 2003.
The pair eventually struck up a relationship, and they went on to tie the knot in March of 2012.
The former couple went on to welcome a son named Jeremiah Carter, eight, and a daughter named Juliana, 6.
Mia’s eldest child Sasha, whom she welcomed during a previous marriage, also grew close to Gordon during her mother’s marriage.
The reality television personality served as a step-grandmother to several of her estranged husband’s grandchildren.
The media figure often shared images featuring her husband and their children on her Instagram account over the length of their marriage.
Mia’s marital woes were hinted at during the trailer for The Real Housewives Of Potomac’s fifth season, which was released on Thursday.
In the clip, the reality television personality admitted that she had once sought the services of a ‘divorce lawyer’ during a particularly rough part of her marriage.
She was also seen while telling her castmate, Ashley Darby, that she ‘might’ have married her husband for his wealth.
The fifth season of The Real Housewives Of Potomac is currently scheduled to premiere on November 5.
