Education and early career
Born in Kentville, Nova Scotia, to Indian-origin parents — both doctors — Anita Anand grew up in a rural setting that shaped her values and work ethic. She moved to Ontario in 1985 and went on to pursue an exceptional academic career.
Anand earned a BA in political studies from Queen’s University, followed by a BA in jurisprudence from Oxford University. She further honed her legal expertise with a bachelor of laws from Dalhousie University and a master of laws from the University of Toronto.
Anand held various teaching positions at prestigious institutions like Yale Law School, Queen’s University, and Western University. As a law professor at the University of Toronto, she also held the JR Kimber Chair in investor protection and corporate governance. Her academic background, along with her research in policy, corporate governance, and law, has helped shape her approach to leadership in the public sector.
Anita Anand’s personal life reflects the same values that guide her political career. She is married to John Knowlton, a Canadian lawyer and business executive, and they have four children. The family resides in Oakville, where Anand has represented her community in Parliament.

Political ascent
Anita Anand’s political career began in 2019 when she was elected as the MP for Oakville, a suburban district in the Greater Toronto Area. Anand wasted no time establishing herself as a key figure in the Liberal Party.
Her political trajectory accelerated when she was appointed minister of public services and procurement, where she played a pivotal role during the COVID-19 pandemic. She was instrumental in negotiating contracts to secure critical supplies for Canadians, including vaccines, personal protective equipment (PPE), and rapid tests. Her leadership during this challenging time earned her widespread recognition.
Minister of defence
In 2021, Anand was appointed Canada’s minister of national defence, a role that would test her leadership on both national and global fronts. One of her most significant achievements was implementing reforms to address the issue of sexual misconduct in the Canadian Armed Forces.
Her efforts to change the military’s culture were widely regarded as necessary and long overdue. Anand also spearheaded efforts to provide military aid to Ukraine in the wake of Russia’s invasion, overseeing Canada’s contributions to Ukrainian military training and equipment.
Anand’s tenure as defence minister was not without its challenges. Amid a personnel crisis in the Canadian Armed Forces, she worked diligently to restore confidence in the military’s leadership. Despite facing a controversial reshuffle that saw her moved to the Treasury Board, Anand remained a key figure in Trudeau’s Cabinet. Her reputation as a capable, pragmatic leader only grew during this period.
Transport minister
In December 2024, Anand was appointed minister of transport, overseeing a crucial portfolio that involves the development and modernisation of Canada’s transportation infrastructure. As transport minister, she has worked on improving the sustainability and efficiency of Canada’s transportation systems, with an eye on innovative solutions to challenges like climate change and urban congestion.
She has also emphasised the importance of safety and accessibility within the transportation sector, an area she has continued to focus on during her tenure.
In addition to her role as transport minister, Anand also serves as the president of the Treasury Board, where she has continued to advocate for transparency, fiscal responsibility, and government accountability.
Canada’s potential first female PM
Anand’s political philosophy is rooted in the values of inclusivity, accountability, and social justice. As a woman of Indian descent, she has become a symbol of Canada’s diverse political landscape. She has consistently advocated for policy changes that reflect the evolving needs of Canadians, particularly in areas like public health, defence, and infrastructure.
