The lively gathering organized by the Embassy of China in the Philippines, named “Chinese Cuisine: A Culinary Tapestry of History and Flavor” rose above tensions related to the West Philippine Sea and focused instead in the celebration of the vibrant culinary heritage that unites the two nations.
Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines Huang Xilian welcomed Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Theresa Lazaro, the honored guest, as they came together in joy for this occasion.
Rather than focusing on political complexities, the spotlight was on the rich contributions and influence of Chinese cuisine around the world, especially in the Philippines.
The event featured some of China’s top chefs, who presented a delightful array of traditional dishes from different provinces, showcasing the artistry and depth of Chinese culinary traditions.
A significant theme during the evening was the undeniable impact of Chinese cuisine on Filipino food.
Vice President Sara Duterte conveyed this concept in a video message, pointing out that many beloved Filipino favorites have roots in Chinese cooking.
“Many Filipino staples like pancit and noodles, which symbolize longevity, siopao or steamed buns, and lumpia or spring rolls, have their origins in Chinese cuisine, adapted over time to match local tastes and ingredients,” she noted.
The gathering served as a reminder that the relationship between China and the Philippines encompasses much more than territorial disputes.
Ambassador Huang shared hope for the future of this partnership, aspiring for deeper cultural and interpersonal exchanges in the years ahead.
“We hope our two sides will work together to forge a brighter future for China-Philippines cultural and people-to-people interactions, especially in 2025 when we celebrate the 50th anniversary of our diplomatic ties,” said Ambassador Huang.
Undersecretary Lazaro acknowledged the dynamic and occasionally colorful history of the China-Philippines relationship, noting that while challenges are present, the cultural and human relationships remain a meaningful foundation.
“Similarly, the story of our bilateral relations is both eventful and at times colorful; yet the cultural and people-to-people connections between our two great nations have consistently provided comfort and reassurance,” she said.
