After Dhanush, ‘Chandramukhi’ makers send Nayanthara legal notice for her documentary

Nayanthara’s Netflix documentary, ‘Nayanthara: Beyond The Fairy Tale’, has landed the actress in fresh legal trouble after the makers of ‘Chandramukhi’ demanded ₹5 crore for using a few seconds of footage from the popular 2005 film without authorisation, according to reports.

The documentary, which started streaming on Netflix on November 18, 2024, looks back at Nayanthara’s journey towards love and stardom amid personal struggles and triumphs.

It came into the limelight both before and after its release, especially when actor Dhanush issued a legal notice against Nayanthara and her husband, Vignesh Shivan, accusing them of using clips from the 2014 film ‘Naanum Rowdy Dhaan’ without prior permission.

The documentary features clips from many of her films in the Indian entertainment industry.

The issue escalated further after Nayanthara shared a lengthy three-page statement, accusing Dhanush of harbouring a grudge against them.

And now, the makers of ‘Chandramukhi’, which featured Rajinikanth and Jyotika, have sent a legal notice to Nayanthara for using footage from the film, Gulte reported.

Meanwhile, Tamil film industry tracker Manobala Vijayabalan shared that the claim was ‘untrue’ since Nayanthara had already received the NOC from Sivaji Productions.

“This is to certify that Sivaji Productions has no objection to the use of the following video footage in the Netflix documentary ‘Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairy Tale’,” read the No Objection Letter, dated November 2, 2024, shared by Vijayabalan on X.

In November 2024, Nayanthara received a legal notice from Dhanush after the trailer release of her documentary, demanding ₹10 crore for the use of a three-second clip featuring Nayanthara and Vignesh Shivan.

After receiving the legal notice from the actor, Nayanthara released a list thanking people, who extended support and granted NOCs for using clips from their respective films for her documentary.

The list included names like Shah Rukh Khan and Chiranjeevi, along with ‘Chandramukhi’ producer Ramkumar Ganesan.

“I am in receipt of your legal notice and we shall respond to it befittingly through lawful means. Your refusal to give NOC for the use of elements of Naanum Rowdy Dhaan in our Netflix documentary might be justified by you from a copyright standpoint, but I wish to remind you that there is a moral side to it, which must be defended in the court of God,” Nayanthara said while responding to the legal notice.

In an open letter, Nayanthara claimed that she and her team spent two years securing permission to use ‘Naanum Rowdy Dhaan’ footage in her documentary, expressing shock over receiving the legal notice after its trailer release.

“What’s even more shocking is your legal notice after the release of the trailer of the Netflix Documentary. We were startled to read those lines wherein you questioned the usage of some videos (just 3 seconds) which were shot with our personal devices and that too BTS visuals that are already very much publicly present on social media and claimed a sum of Rs 10 crores as damages for the mere 3 seconds. This is an all-time low from you and speaks so much about your character,” she wrote.
