Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar was in Delhi to launch the scheme. “Today, I am here to launch the ‘Pyari Didi’ scheme. I am confident that Congress will form the government in Delhi and we will provide ₹2,500 to women, and it will be decided in the very first meeting of cabinet – on the same model that we implemented in Karnataka.”
The grand old party is trying to woo women, who form a major chunk of voters. Several past elections have proved that these women-centric schemes play a pivotal role in politics.
The Election Commission has released the final voter count for Delhi polls. The total number of voters are 1,54,24,858 out of which 71,73,952 are female voters.
Last year, Aam Aadmi Party national convenor Arvind Kejriwal had announced an increase in the monthly stipend under the Mukhyamantri Mahila Samman Yojana, aimed at women aged 18 and above. The amount has been hiked from ₹1,000 to ₹2,100.
In Maharashtra elections, the Mahayuti government won with a huge mandate and political observers believed that ‘Mukhyamantri Ladki Bahin Yojana’ played a key role. The scheme provided a monthly allowance of Rs 1,500 to eligible women. During the assembly election campaign, former Chief Minister Shinde had pledged to increase this assistance to Rs 2,100 if re-elected.
In 2023, the Congress government in Karnataka launched the Gruha Lakshmi scheme, which is aimed to facilitate an unconditional cash transfer program that would deposit Rs 2,000 monthly into the bank accounts of women heading households.
