Happy new fashion year! The Golden Globes red carpet always sneaks up on us, particularly in Australia when most people’s idea of black tie in January refers to a string bikini. But, we back.
In case you need reminding of where the Golden Globes sits in the hierarchy of red rugs, it’s in the upper quartile: less opulent than the Oscars, more glamorous than the Emmys and less fashion-y than either the Met Gala or Grammys (each for different reasons).
Falling between runway seasons, on the tail of the upcoming couture shows but with the spring-summer shows well in the rear-view mirror, there are few tales of getting gowns from runway to red carpet at breakneck speed. Still, there is plenty to be excited about.
Will Wicked stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande continue their run of colour-coded gowns that defy gravity (sorry, couldn’t resist)? Which designers will Australian stars Nicole Kidman, nominated for Babygirl, and Naomi Watts, nominated for Feud, wear? And will the male stars of Hollywood give us something to write about?
Let’s hope last year’s dominant trend of black and white is left in quiet luxury’s immediate past, and there will be more colour and movement. We’ll hold space for that.
