OYO bans check-ins for unmarried couples, introduces proof of relationship

Indian hospitality chain OYO has introduced a revised check-in policy for partner hotels, beginning in Meerut. Under the new guidelines, unmarried couples will no longer be allowed to check in. All couples will now be required to present valid proof of their relationship during check-in, including for online bookings.

The company has empowered its partner hotels to exercise discretion in declining couple bookings based on their judgment, considering local social norms. The directive is already in effect in Meerut, with potential plans to expand the policy to other cities based on feedback, according to sources familiar with the matter.

“OYO has received feedback in the past from civil society groups, especially in Meerut, urging action to address this issue. Residents from other cities have also petitioned for similar measures,” said individuals aware of the policy change.

Pawas Sharma, Region Head, OYO North India, stated, “OYO is committed to upholding safe and responsible hospitality practices. While we respect individual freedoms and personal liberty, we also recognise our responsibility to listen to and work with law enforcement and civil society groups in the micro markets we operate in. We will continue to review this policy and its impact periodically.”

The initiative is part of OYO’s broader effort to project itself as a safe and reliable brand for families, students, business travellers, religious pilgrims, and solo travellers. The company also aims to promote longer stays and build customer trust and loyalty.

As part of its nationwide efforts, OYO has collaborated with police and hotel partners to host seminars on safe hospitality, blacklisted hotels allegedly involved in immoral activities, and taken action against unauthorised establishments using its branding.
