18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas: PM Modi to inaugurate in Bhubaneswar on Jan 9

The 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) Convention will take place in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, from January 8 to 10, 2025. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will formally inaugurate the three-day event on January 9, with a virtual address by Christine Carla Kangaloo, the President of Trinidad & Tobago, who will be the chief guest.

The convention is expected to highlight India’s economic growth, policy reforms, and progress in key sectors to attract overseas Indian investors. A significant number of overseas Indians, including prominent businessmen, entrepreneurs, and economists from over 50 countries, are likely to attend.

Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is celebrated on January 9 to commemorate Mahatma Gandhi’s return to India on this day in 1915.

One of the key highlights of the event will be the flagging off of the Pravasi Bharatiya Express, a special tourist train under the Pravasi Teertha Darshan Yojana. This initiative offers the Indian diaspora an opportunity to explore India’s religious and cultural landmarks.

During the event, PM Modi will also inaugurate four exhibitions: Vishwaroop Ram, which presents the Ramayana through various art forms, Diaspora’s Contribution to Technology, which celebrates the global impact of the diaspora in technology, Evolution of the Indian Diaspora, highlighting migration stories from Mandvi to Muscat, and Heritage and Culture of Odisha, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the state.

On January 10, President Droupadi Murmu will preside over the Valedictory Session and present the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards to members of the diaspora for their outstanding contributions.

The convention will also feature thematic plenary sessions covering a variety of topics including diaspora youth leadership, migrant skills, sustainable development, women’s leadership, and cultural connections. These sessions will be accompanied by panel discussions with diaspora experts.

In addition, the Youth Pravasi Bharatiya Divas will be held on January 8, in partnership with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, with Dr Dev Pragad, CEO of Newsweek, serving as the guest of honour.
